I'm Hori

Ancient Egypt - 3,300 years ago

Hi, I’m Hori. I'm a tomb painter from Egypt and I live at the time of Tutankhamun, the boy king. Have you heard of him? He became Pharaoh in 1332 BC.

My country is very wealthy and the Pharaohs are buried in huge pyramids. But so much is different here compared to my own time! We use mud bricks and palm logs to build our houses, and wear amulets to protect us. We believe in many different gods and capture their power inside the amulets. They often look like animals, such as frogs and cats. Cats are sacred to us.

I’m training to paint tombs in the City of the Dead. I get my paint colours from minerals in the earth. We write stories on the walls of temples and tombs in hieroglyphics. This is a kind of writing which uses pictures and symbols instead of letters or words.
